Bude to Widemouth and the Bude Canal

February 2016 - A 6 mile circular walk from Bude to Widemouth along the coastal path and then inland and back along the Bude Canal.

On arrival in Bude we parked at the long stay car park at Summerleaze Beach, we had intended to have lunch at Life's A Beach at the end of our walk, the car park was £1.50 for 24 hours (can't complain).

We walked through the town, over the bridge and across to the lock on the canal and onto the beach. In order to get to the coastal path we climbed a steep hill, at the top of which we found a bench to relax on and have a coffee from our thermos and enjoy a great view over the town.

We then followed the Coastal Path, which gently rolls along above the cliffs to Widemouth.

We then swung inland on a concrete farm track which lead us across some large fields down, then around a small village of farm holiday units and to the Weir Cafe beside the Bude Canal.  The canal was built in 1823 to carry lime ladden local sand upto 35 miles inland to fertilise the land.  We enjoyed a beautiful walk along the canal, full of bird life, back to Bude.  Unfortunately our intended lunch stop was closed despite a sign in the car park sating otherwise.  Anyway when we had walked along the canal into the town we had seen several nice looking alternatives.

We chose the Olive Tree Cafe and Bistro, the food was excellent, the service exceptionally slow.
